RAINBOW MUGS

$90 each
Size: approximately 16-18oz
.
Wheel-thrown porcelain mug, adorned with rainbow underglaze illustration of mugs wrapping around the whole mug.
.
Why rainbows?  For a long time I’ve been thinking about how to incorporate a rainbow into my art.  Rainbows have popped up in moments of my life I needed them most, almost like a sign that everything was going to be okay.  I wanted to illustrate a rainbow in a way that felt personal to my life.  What better way than mugs, another object that has held such importance to me.
.
These mugs in particular were a labor of love.  I appreciated the process of slowing down even further to create pieces with little intricate details.

ETCHED MUGS

$75 each
Size: approximately 20oz
.
Wheel-thrown porcelain mug, adorned with bare clay etching & gold luster details.  The etching detail wraps around the entire bottom of the mug. (gold luster details are not microwave safe)
.
This is a favorite style I keep coming back to - one of the only patterns I'll repeat because it feels like home.  I am drawn to the repetitive motion of etching these lines, and find myself particularly happy when the pattern merges together and finally closes.

.
Wheel-thrown porcelain mug, adorned with underglaze illustration and gold luster details.  (gold luster details are not microwave safe)
.
I was one of those people at the beginning of the pandemic who picked up an indoor plant hobby…well obsession.  I quickly learned that I am in fact not a plant person.  Despite loving their beauty, few survived my care.  This makes me appreciate my plants that have thrived even more.  The pathos I have are growing long and going strong.  I always find myself wanting to paint them because they are not only lovely to look at, but they are a symbol of success for me.

.
When I can’t seem to think of any new ideas, I make myself a gift.
.
Sure enough, as I was decorating my last few pieces I was drawing a blank. I set a goblet aside and said “okay this one is for me”.
.
We haven’t been on a warm vacation in literally years now. In March we’re finally going take a quick trip down to California to visit family & soak up some sun. My uncle has these delicious Meyer Lemon trees (you know, the ones that look like oranges on the outside but taste like lemons). I’m day-dreaming of picking lemons off the tree and making drinks pool side.

Lemons always feel like that reference to Summer.   There’s something about this time of year that has me day-dreaming.  It feels like we are past the depths of winter, but it’s certainly not spring.  Each day that comes with bright sun gets me more and more excited.  Willing Spring and Summer into existence, I find myself illustrating objects that remind me of that time.  Reaching for my brightest underglazes, I am fixated on the sweet parts of the year ahead.

BUBBLE MUGS

Size: approximately 16-18oz
.
Wheel-thrown porcelain mug, adorned with underglaze bubble decoration, sepia tone decal transfer of original image, and gold luster details.  (gold luster details are not microwave safe)

A lesson I’ve had to repeated learn in ceramics is to let go of control.  Working with the fluidity of this medium rather than against it has taught me many new ways to decorate.  Bubble glazing is a process that takes on a path of it’s own.  I enjoy watching the course in which the bubbles fall, creating a decoration far lovelier than one that could be controlled.

I drew this pencil drawing years ago, and to this day it hangs in my home.  It was an empowering piece to create, and continues to bring me daily joy.
